Pay As You Feel #PAYF

About Saltaire Canteen

Food for a better future

Saltaire Canteen began its operations in December 2014. As part of The Real Junk Food Project it had twin aims – to challenge the issue of food waste and confront the issue of food poverty in Shipley. A motivation for those of us behind Saltaire Canteen is that of the need for improved stewardship of the Earth, borne out of an underlying Christian ethos.

Reducing food waste

The Canteen runs along the principles of the Real Junk Food Project of which it is a part – the food used by the Canteen is “intercepted”, that is, it is overwhelmingly food that would otherwise have gone to landfill or anaerobic digestion. The Canteen also operates on a “Pay as you feel” basis – there is no set charge made for it. Customers may contribute for food either in money, time or skills.

Our Ethos

To challenge the problems of food waste and food poverty in Shipley.
